AB Update

Thanks to everyone for all the thoughts and prayers! I appreciate it more than you could ever know.

AB and Mommy and Daddy have finally made it home from the hospital. The doctor says it is just a matter of time to see if the flesh will heal. AB acts as if nothing has happened and nothing is wrong - giving Aunt Woody a mild coronary when she jumped off of the couch!

Accident details:

Weezy was heading out the back door with the girls, holding AB's hand. As best we can figure, AB had reached to use the door frame (hinge side) for support going down the steps. Weezy didn't see and closed the door. So the tip of AB's finger was caught between the door and the frame.

As you can see, I have mad skilz with Paint. But you get the idea of the injury.

Poor Weezy has just been beside herself. She is such a tender-hearted little girl. The thought that she closed the door and hurt AB has almost been more than she can handle. We have tried to explain that it was just an accident and that it could have been any one of us. But still, her heart is broken. Please remember her in your prayers.

I honestly never knew I had a calm bone in my body. But I was johnny-on-the-spot.

Prima Ballerina took one look at AB's bloody hand and promptly lost her ever-loving mind. I was right behind her and scooped AB up, pressing her hand into my chest. A damp paper towel appeared and I wrapped her finger in that.

As I was heading to the kitchen for a towel, I very calmly stated that Yes, we needed to go to the hospital.

I can still hear my voice, low and soothing, talking to AB and to Prima Ballerina. Somehow I was able to buckle AB into her car seat and tighten the straps without releasing pressure on that hand.

At the hospital, I was able to calmly answer all the questions by the ER staff. Poor Prima Ballerina's brain had just short-circuited.

Since AB had just eaten, they had to wait several hours to go to surgery in order to reduce the risk of her aspirating the contents of her stomach. So she was given morphine to ease the pain and to calm her. She was one funny baby!

She was laying across The Boss Man's lap with her head hanging over his arm. From her position, everyone was upside down. She would tell someone that they were upside down and giggle and giggle and giggle.

She also thought the glow stick that the nurse brought to her was really, really groovy!

The surgery itself didn't last very long and they were back in the room by around 2am. She slept most of the night - getting nauseous a couple of times. The nurses gave her a shot of phenergan which knocked her out again.

Today, all has been well. No nausea, no fever. Just one grumpy little girl that was really pissed to be hooked to all those wires. But she was happy as could be once she got home.

Now comes the challenge - keeping that bandage clean and dry!

Sounds like YOU were the hero, Woody... In those situations, there needs to be one person who keeps their cool... (Then-after it's over ---that person ---YOU---can jump up and down and get it all OUT)...

Glad the little Peanut is okay... You all did the right thing by taking her to the hospital...

Thanks for the update
Hugs,
Betsy

Somehow I am not at all surprised that you were the calm one. Best wishes for AB's speedy recovery! Poor thing...and poor Weezy...she has to feel worse than AB.

You really ought to have signed the Paint drawing. That will be in a gallery someday.

Sending nothing but good thoughts....and I am so glad that you were able to be there for them. It's always such a blessing to have someone in an accident like that with a calm head. Please tell sweet Weezy that she did not do this...poor baby.

I am so glad to hear this. What sweet babies!! I too have had rare moments of utter calmness during stressful emergency situations, but once I turn it over the the trained professionals, I go throw up. I know, TMI.

We were just talking about staying calm in emergency situations yesterday at work. My boss's son broke his arm, I guess it was in the shape of an S. When asked how his mom did following the accident he said she was very calm and it was kind of freaky! I tell you, we just do what we gotta do!

I will keep Weezy in my thoughts... It's not her fault at all! I hope the finger heals quickly, keeping the bandage clean will be a challenge.

Poor Wheezy and poor AB. What a story!
Kudos to you for your calm head and purpose. It's not everyone that can instictively keep everyone around them on track during a medical crisis!

Hoping for quick healing and a good outcome!

Are you selling copies of that drawing yet?

Aww, poor little mite! I hope she heals well and doesn't lose the tip. Your drawing was great by the way. If only injuries were really that neat!

The same thing happened to my best friend when I was at school. I'd been picked up in her father's car to go home and play with her for a while (this was when I was about seven) and her father accidentally slammed the car door on her finger. He took a detour to the hospital and left me in the car in the car park while he took her inside to be seen. It was the longest however-long-it-was in my short life waiting to see if she was OK.

I had visions of having to go back and look for her finger in the gutter!

Dang! Exposed bone? When I cut the tips off my fingers all I had was stiches. So, I'm thinking she did'nt just cut the tip off. It had to be the top third of her little digit. Geeze Loueeze! Poor baby!

Glad it turned out well & that she's back home. PB has my prayers for sure. Another poor baby!
