The Big One

Today is a very special day.
My most favorite person in the universe turns 40!
Happy Birthday, Vol Fan!

This weekend should have been the fruition of months and months of planning.  Life and work and geographical distances and in the way and it wasn't.  But it was a great idea.

Months and months and months ago, I started thinking of a way to surprise Vol Fan for his 40th birthday.  Vol Fan is either very, very hard to surprise or I am very, very bad at keeping secrets.  So in the last 20 years, I have surprised him exactly zero times.

But this year was going to be different.  I had a plan.  A brilliant plan!

Vol Fan likes plans.  So when work or life cause him to not have a plan, he is a very unhappy camper.  And his love of plans played directly into my plans.  I had schemed with my brother (Vol Fan's boss at the time), Vol Fan's brother, and Vol Fan's best friend.  It was going to be awesome!

On Thursday night, my brother was going to call Vol Fan and tell him that he needed him to go to Ft. Lauderdale with him to scout out a job.  And he needed to leave first thing in the morning.  Yes, leave with little notice and the day before his birthday.  Vol Fan would have been livid!  But he would have gone.

To try to keep him from blowing his top, I was going to offer to pack his bags for him.

Friday morning, my brother was going to pick him up and they were going to head to the airport.  I am sure it would have been a very quiet ride - with Vol Fan quietly fuming!  While at the airport, two people were going to walk up...Vol Fan's brother and best friend.  At that point, Vol Fan would have known that something was up.

Yes, he would have been duped!  Instead of going to Ft. Lauderdale to work, I had made plans for a guys weekend - complete with a charter fishing trip to try to catch The Big One!

After life got in the way and I realized that I would not be able to pull off the surprise, I told Vol Fan.  I still plan to send him on his guys weekend.  It just won't happen on his birthday.  Thankfully, he was still over the moon about the possibility of catching The Big One.  I think he wants to build a house to have a game room so he can hang it on the wall:)

So instead of going fishing for his birthday, he has other plans.  Huge plans.  You will never guess what he wants to do....We aren't able to go this weekend but trust me, I will tell you ALL about it when we do!!  Oh, the suspense!!

Aren't you the sweetest wife ever! I hope you are able to surprise him with something like this someday. My husband is very hard to surprise too and I am terrible about keeping secrets or telling white lies without showing it on my face. :)

Happy Birthday Vol Fan. I hope whatever it is that he has planned that he has a spectacular day. I look forward to hearing(and seeing pictures!)all about it! Oh the suspense! :) Happy weekend dear friend...I've missed visiting you! XX
