The Marine Layer

Since Vol Fan and I live along the coast, my family and friends have often heard me complain about the marine layer.  I have tried and tried to explain what it is.  But it really defies explanation.

It is a layer of fog that forms at sea. The why/how/when of its formation is beyond me.  But it forms.  And when conditions are right, it pulls inland.  It cools things off.  It blocks the sun.  Making an otherwise beautiful day, gray and yucky.

After many months of complaining and many months of trying to explain what it is, I finally saw it from a vantage point where I was able to get a photograph.  And since a picture is worth a thousand words, I present to you -- The Marine Layer.

Neat, Woody... I've seen those before ---but had forgotten about them... We used to have them sometimes when we lived in Jacksonville, FL

Sometimes the inland fog was so heavy, you couldn't see 5 feet in front of you.. Weird...

Betsy

What a cool photo. I am guessing this is a "west coast" thing, cause I have never seen it over here.

Great photo! The marine layer does make for some yucky mornings... we call it June Gloom. But, now that I live inland enough that we don't get the marine layer, it is hot when we wake up, hot when we go back to bed. I miss the marine layer, and the fact that we used to cool off in between hot days. I guess what I am saying is that the marine layer is better than the alternative.

I miss the marine layer. No one is Texas has a clue what it is.

I've seen it before but never knew there was an actual name for it. Interesting indeed!
