Plains

Another spot I visited while in SW Georgia was Plains - home of President Jimmy Carter.  Yes, that is where yesterday's photo was taken :)

I had the most delicious peanut butter ice cream at Plain Peanuts (and I don't even LIKE peanut butter ice cream!!).  It is located just under the 'Jimmy' in the above picture.  But other than that, I have to say there isn't a whole lot going on in Plains.  But I found enough to occupy an afternoon.  It doesn't take much to amuse me!

I toured the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site.  The main section is located in what was the local high school.  One thing that I really enjoyed was the honor that was shown to the people that were influential in his early life, especially one of his favorite teachers - Miss Julia.  She frequently had words of encouragement for her students.  Apparently, one of her favorite things to say was "Study hard because one of you may become President someday".  You never know the effect your words may have!!

I tried REAL hard to get a pic with the President and Mrs. Carter.  But it is pretty tough when using your purse as a tripod!

I also did a little stalking of their home.  I thought it was pretty cool that they still live in the home that they purchased in the 1960s.  They have purchased the surrounding land and had it fenced for privacy and safety.
You can also tour President Carter's boyhood home, the train depot that served as the headquarters for his presidential campaign, and Billy Carter's service station. I was a little more drawn to the tracks than anything else.

Before my visit, I didn't really know much about President Carter.  Still don't as far as politics is concerned - I skipped over those parts in the displays.  But I do feel like I learned about the man.  And I have to say that I was very impressed with their humanitarian efforts led by Mrs. Carter.

Just any FYI, you can attend Sunday School at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains and if you are lucky, it might just be a day that the President is the teacher:)
