The Hotel Queen

Vol Fan and I have gotten settled into our new digs in Gray, Georgia.  Unfortunately, this is a very quick job and quick jobs mean living in a hotel rather than getting an apartment.  Hotel living can be challenging.  It's not like we are Eloise At The Plaza with a bellman and room service.

The first challenge is finding a place to store all your crap.
  • Lesson #1 - Pack light.  And I really need to take my own advice on this one!!
  • Lesson #2 - Pack in tubs or bags rather than suitcases.  Tubs are extremely handy for storing things in the space under the sink.  Or to use as a laundry basket to go to the laundromat.
  • Lesson #3 - You can store things in that magic place called the trunk of your car.

The second challenge is food.....unless you are made of money and want to eat out for every meal.
  • Lesson #4 - A crockpot is a miracle invention.  Last night we had a delicious dinner of roast with potatoes and carrots!
  • Lesson #5 - A George Foreman grill is another miracle invention.  Don't be afraid to use it!
  • Lesson #6 - Don't shop at Sam's Club or Costco!

The third challenge is probably the hardest to overcome.  You are in a hotel room.  Four walls.  TV.  Bed.  BORING!  Many road warriors conquer this boredom with beer.  Since I don't like beer, I prefer to be a little more creative.
  • Lesson #7 - Toys!!  Tennis rackets.  Fishing poles.  A float for the pool.  Bring toys and play with them.
  • Lesson #8 - Explore!  This is my favorite escape.  I love to explore the area where we are.  If possible, I bring my bicycle and explore on two wheels.
  • Lesson #9 - Google is your friend.  You can find festivals, tourist attractions, all kinds of stuff!

And one final lesson that defies a category.
  • Lesson #10 - Glade Plug-in with Clean Linen scent.  To knock off that two-people-living-in-an-older-hotel-room-and-one-of-them-is-a-construction-worker scent.

I bet you are having an adventure!!! Can't wait to hear all about it, like you used to do. I would get all excited when you would post about the activities that you had found!

You are so funny. Love your 'lessons'.... But--I thought you'd enjoy Sam's because of all of the free food there!!!!! ha ha

When George and I go to the beach (for only 1 week)--we stay in a motel-type room. We want to be on the beach (which we are) --and don't really need an expensive beach house... SO--we're happy with this little room. We do have a balcony overlooking the ocean.

In that room, we do have a tiny frig, a microwave, coffee pot, big TV/internet, and a king bed (plus full bath)... It works for us ---but we do get a little crowded there. AND--we are only there for ONE week.... Good Luck!!!

Hugs,
Betsy

These are wonderful lessons. I hope you are having a successful stay in Gray, Georgia, and that you can do quite a bit of exploring -- hopefully on your bicycle.

It sounds like you've done this a time or 14! Great ideas....I do hope to NOT spend any length of time in a hotel...unless I hang out with Eloise. :)

I used to have a job where I traveled 3 months in the fall and 4 weeks in the spring. I liked it, for the most part. I loved running in new places all the time. But it is nice to have a home cooked meal.

You're actually making it sounds like lots of fun! Back when I'd take the kids to the lake we always looked like the Beverly Hillbillys w/ the Suburban a couple of inches off the ground...

Hope it's a fun job for you guys!
