Savannah

As most of you know, I 'collect' visits to units of the National Park Service.  Vol Fan knew I lacked a visit to Fort Pulaski National Monument in Savannah, Georgia.  Since our job location is a short 2.5 hour drive from Savannah, we drove down for a quick weekend trip.

Fort Pulaski has stood guard over the Savannah River for more than 150 years.  I probably should have a retained a little more of what I learned about the fort but I didn't.  Its a fort.  On the Savannah River.  It got shelled during the Civil War.  That's about all I have! :)  At this point in my mission to visit all the units in the National Park system, its going to take a pretty spectacular fort to stand out.  It is a cool place to visit though and had a great trail to walk or run along the river thru the marsh.

I tend to be a little more intrigued by the small things.  Things like this special little door inside the door to the fort.  While I know it served a purpose, I like to think it was a special door just for little people:)

Or how Vol Fan would not have had a comfortable night's sleep.  I've always told him he was a giant, maybe now he believes me!

Or the tracks in the floor made by the cannon as it was swung from side to side in order to aim.

Or these repeating arches.

And then Vol Fan showed off his muscles and moved the cannon along the track.  He probably wasn't supposed to do that but what can I say?  He's a rebel!

And then we made a fabulous discovery....
